Do you offer different sizes?
Yes, we custom-build every garden studio, so you can choose the size that works best for your space.
Most clients opt for studios under 20m², as these usually don’t require council approval, but we can go larger if you’re happy to obtain a CDC/DA.
Popular sizes range from 3m x 3m up to 5m x 4m, but we’ll work with you to design the right fit.
Do I need council approval?
Not always. In many cases, garden studios that are under 20m² and positioned within the setback rules can be built without council approval. This makes them a great option if you’re looking for a straightforward way to add more space at home.
If you’d like your studio to be larger than 20m² or to include plumbing for a bathroom or kitchenette, then you will need to apply for a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) or Development Application (DA). These approvals ensure that plumbing, drainage, and additional size requirements meet council standards.
Can I add a bathroom or kitchenette?
Yes, you can add plumbing for a bathroom or kitchenette if you’d like your studio to be more self-contained. However, adding plumbing will require you to go through a CDC or DA process, as additional approvals are needed for water and drainage connections.
Once approved, plumbing can turn your studio into a fantastic granny flat, guest suite, or short-stay space.
How long does it take?
Once everything is ready to go, most studios are completed in 4–6 weeks. The timeframe depends on the size, complexity, and finishes you choose.
Smaller, under-20m² studios without plumbing are usually quicker to complete, while larger builds or those with bathrooms and kitchens take longer due to the additional approvals and trade work required.
